Peep into your wardrobe and sift through the stacks of clothing you have in that closet. Notice that dress you bought last year from Mango, the one you promised to fit into in a month? And what about that ASOS piece, which has worked its way to the end of your cupboard without you realising it exists? Now think about the number of times you’ve uttered: “What do I wear today?”, or the moolah you’ve spent on these modish pieces. Frankly, everyone is guilty of hoarding pieces in their wardrobes they either lose interest in or maybe even forget about. And that’s why the need of the hour is fashion rental services. Because why spend on something when you can rent it out?
While the international market is huge for wardrobe rental services, with successful ventures like Rent The Runway, Lending Luxury, Girl Meets Dress, etc — in India this is still in its early days. The fact that many aspire to be clad in designer wear but fail to do so because of how exorbitantly priced they are, is reason enough for the success of this business model. Also, the desire to not repeat an outfit adds to why these affordable options are perfect for those who want to strut out of a style rut. It’s as simple as this — All you have to do is rent a garment (pay rentals for as long as you have it with you) and return it once your purpose of wearing it is solved. In case you really like the rented attire, some of these services even allow you to buy the piece at a nominal cost. While some of these services have a virtual store to rent from, there are a few that are also actually brick and mortar retail.
